67th Academy Awards
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the president
of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,
Arthur Hiller!"
The 1995 Academy Awards Ceremony. The 67th Oscars on
the 100th aniversary of the commercial screening of
motion pictures. This year presented by the utterly
brilliant Dave Letterman!
Each Oscar is thirteen and a half inches high, weighs
about eight pounds and costs under one hundred pounds
($150) to make! So, no... they're not solid gold.
"Ladies and gentlemen; hang onto your wigs and keys! It's time to start
handing out Academy Awards!"

Dave's Academy Awards Top 10 List
"Ladies and gentlemen; here in my right hand I have
a copy of tonight's top 10 list... Let's get right to it!"
"From the home office in Hollywood, California, tonight's
top 10 list category: top ten signs that the movie you're
watching will not win an Academy Award. Here we go..."
10. It still has the time code from the camcorder
9. Any combination of the words "Police" and
"Academy" in the title
8. It's a movie about the civil war and General Grant is
wearing dockers
7. You hear someone yelling "Focus!" and you realize it's
the director
6. It's a beautifully made documentary about two kids in
the inner city trying to realize their dream of playing
professional basketball
5. The last 20 minutes is a shot of Richie from local 262
eating donuts
4. Your date had to jam a hypodermic needle full of
adrenaline into your heart just to keep you awake
3. Before it starts, you hear, "Thank you for coming
to Loews, sit back and relax, this movie blows!"
2. Nude scene with Uma Thurman replaced by nude scene
with Strom Thurmond
[drum roll]
1. Four words: "Dom DeLuise is Ghandi!"
My short summary of the evening
I don't know about anyone else, but I thought the Oscars
was very well put on, I guess mainly due to the great
Dave!
Forrest Gump didn't clean up in quite the way that
people had predicted, but it did go finish the evening
with a total of 6 awards.
Paul Newman totally botched his presentation of Best
Cinematography by forgetting to announce any but the
first in the line-up of five nominees. John Toll of
Legends of the Fall took it upon himself in his
acceptance speech to mention the names of the other
cinematographers who were nominated in a kind gesture.
Tom Hanks made a speech that was as expected highly
emotionally charged and positive in nature, saying how
great his wife is among other things. It was like last
year re-run all over again... Not to belittle it. He's
a genuine caring guy and I respect that very much.
Dave really made the evening happen with his usual madcap
and sometimes slightly confusing humour. His top 10 list
was very funny and although his "Oprah...... Uma......
Uma...... Oprah......" thing got a teeny wee bit
anoying, he carried the evening along brilliantly. One
particularly hillarious bit was where Dave played a clip
of himself in Cabin Boy saying "Do you want to
buy a monkey?" and then showed a film of small clips
of an amazing line-up of stars doing funny variations on
the theme, saying that they were other stars who
auditioned for "the plum role". The stars included
Martin Short, Steve martin, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks,
Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, Danny DeVito, Paul Newman,
Michael Keaton, Barry White, and a couple of others who
I couldn't quite identify although they were all terribly
familiar... Michael Keaton was his usual nutty self, Rosie
O'Donnell was hillarious ("You're gonna buy this *beep*
*beep* *beep* monkey!!!" or something to that effect),
and Barry White deep voiced as ever.
The first two nominated best original songs were pretty
useless in my opinion, but the three Disney The Lion
King songs were good, especially the one that actually
won, Can You Feel the Love Tonight?
Congratulations to all who won and to those who lost...
Try again next year!
By the way, there are probably a lot of mistakes in the
spelling of names, etc. as they were not put up on the
screen and I had to interpret a lot of them as well as I
could and write them as I heard them. If you can correct
any mistakes on the page for me, please
e-mail me with the
correction and I'll change it as soon as possible.
